Gardeners Chelsea Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Chelsea is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our principles and arrangements for managing risks associated with gardening and landscaping work across our service area.
Policy Statement
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing sensible, proportionate control measures. Health and safety performance is an integral part of our overall service quality and professional standards. Management and employees at all levels share responsibility for maintaining safe working conditions and work practices.
Legal Compliance and Responsibilities
Gardeners Chelsea complies with relevant health and safety legislation and follows industry best practice for gardening, horticulture and grounds maintenance. We keep informed of changes in regulations and standards and review our procedures when necessary.
Management is responsible for providing safe systems of work, appropriate equipment, information, instruction, training and supervision. Employees must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions, and must cooperate with all safety measures and instructions issued by the company.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any site, we assess the potential risks associated with the tasks, tools, environment and people who may be affected. Where risks are identified, suitable control measures are implemented and communicated to all team members. Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to work activities, equipment or locations.
Safe systems of work are developed for common gardening activities such as lawn care, hedge trimming, tree and shrub maintenance, planting, weed control, waste handling and general grounds upkeep. These procedures are designed to minimise risks including slips and trips, cuts and abrasions, noise and vibration exposure, manual handling injuries and contact with hazardous substances.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
Gardeners Chelsea provides suitable and well maintained tools and machinery for all tasks undertaken. Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate powered equipment such as mowers, hedge trimmers, brush cutters, shredders and similar machinery.
All equipment is inspected regularly and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidance and safety requirements. Defective or damaged tools are removed from service immediately. Guards, safety devices and controls must never be removed or disabled. Operators are required to follow start-up, operation and shut-down procedures and to adhere to manufacturer instructions at all times.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety boots, gloves, eye and face protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing and suitable workwear. Employees are required to use the equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any defects or losses promptly.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads such as bags of soil, tools, waste and plant materials. To reduce the risk of manual handling injuries, staff are trained in correct lifting techniques and encouraged to use mechanical aids, wheelbarrows and trolleys wherever possible. Work planning aims to avoid unnecessary heavy lifting and to distribute loads safely. Employees are expected to avoid overreaching, twisting while lifting or attempting to move loads that are too heavy for them.
Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where the use of garden chemicals or other hazardous substances is necessary, Gardeners Chelsea works to minimise exposure and environmental impact. Only competent personnel handle and apply such products, following product labels, safety data sheets and control measures identified in COSHH style assessments.
Substances are stored securely and used in the smallest practical quantities. Personal protective equipment is worn as required, and measures are taken to prevent contamination of surrounding areas, watercourses, wildlife habitats and neighbouring properties. Empty containers and waste materials are disposed of responsibly.
Site Safety and Public Protection
Working in gardens and outdoor spaces often means operating near homes, walkways, vehicles and public areas. We take care to protect clients, neighbours, visitors and passers-by from potential hazards created by our work. This includes positioning equipment safely, using barriers or warning signs where appropriate, keeping access routes clear and managing vehicle movements carefully.
Noise, dust and other potential disturbances are controlled as far as reasonably practicable. We aim to schedule particularly disruptive activities at suitable times and keep clients informed about any significant impacts on access or routine use of the garden.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Chelsea ensures that employees receive appropriate induction, job-specific training and ongoing instruction relevant to their duties. This includes training on equipment use, safe handling of materials, hazard awareness, emergency procedures and good environmental practice. Additional specialist training is provided for higher risk activities such as tree work, powered equipment operation or the use of particular substances.
Supervisors monitor working practices and provide guidance, feedback and support to maintain safe standards. Where necessary, work is planned so that tasks requiring more than one person are never carried out alone.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses that occur during our work activities must be reported to management as soon as possible. We keep records, investigate the circumstances and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence wherever practicable. Lessons learned are shared with staff and, where relevant, procedures and risk assessments are updated.
Emergency Preparedness
Gardeners Chelsea plans for foreseeable emergencies associated with our work, such as injuries, equipment failures, severe weather or damage to property. Staff know how to raise the alarm, call for emergency assistance and respond to incidents in a calm and controlled manner. Basic first aid provisions are available and suitable arrangements are made depending on the nature and location of the work.
Client Cooperation and Shared Responsibilities
Health and safety is a shared responsibility. We ask clients to inform us of any known hazards within their gardens or grounds that could affect our work, such as unstable structures, buried services, restricted access routes, aggressive animals or previous chemical treatments. We may advise clients on steps they can take to improve safety, such as securing pets, clearing access or informing neighbours of planned works.
Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in our activities, legislation, guidance and best practice. Gardeners Chelsea is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance and to providing a safe and professional gardening service throughout our operating area.
